ASSASSINATION OF BENAZIR BHUTTO

2007

On December 27th, 2007, twice Prime Minister and former leader of the opposition Pakistan People's Party Benazir Bhutto was murdered in Rawalpindi, Pakistan by a 15-year-old suicide bomber. The boy had carried out the assassination on the orders of the Pakistan Taliban.

Bhutto was the daughter of Pakistan's first democratically elected prime minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was hanged by General Zia-ul-Haq's military regime. Like her father, she was always distrusted by the military. Yet, her premature death brought much civil unrest across Pakistan, with supporters taking the streets, rioting, putting up road blocks, attacking police, and chanting anti-Pakistan slogans.
