GUJARAT RIOTS

1969

The September-October 1969 riots in Gujarat, India were the most violent in a series of growing communal violence between Hindus and Muslims. It was perhaps the most deadly conflict between the two religious groups since the Partition of India in 1947. The riot was the first to see massacre, arson, and looting brought on a large scale. According to Jaganmohan Reddy committee, formed to investigate the 1969 Gujarat riots, 660 people were killed, 1,074 were injured, and over 48,000 people were made homeless. However, unofficial records claim that as many as 2,000 people died due to the riots.
