A TRAUMA-INFORMED EXPLORATION of ASIAN AMERICAN HISTORY
COVID-19 ANTI-ASIAN SENTIMENT
2020 – 2022
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities have come face to face with racist and xenophobic violence and discrimination. The anti-Asian sentiments have manifested in plummeting sales and looting of Chinese restaurants, near-deserted Chinatown districts, and bullying against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders—anyone perceived to be Chinese.
Despite how outwardly "American" they appear to be—by the manner in which they carry themselves, the languages they speak, or the patriotism they may display—in times of crises, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are pitched into the "them" category. It has proved to be true time and time again during the Chinese Exclusion Act in the twentieth century, and now.
